Sustainability, Resale Startups Celebrated at Fashinnovation 2021 Conference

The 2021 Fashinnovation Worldwide Talks continued on with a new virtual conference last week, which showcased that the future of fashion is all about sustainability and the startups that are powering the conscious movement behind it.

Ever since the event’s debut in 2018, the conference has become something of a staple within the world of fashion, media, and sustainability—with the brightest minds and innovators taking part in discussions about how both social movements and a refined focus on environmentalism, are influencing global industries for the better.

At this year’s event, several sustainable startups were celebrated for their innovative efforts via a startup pitch competition with companies from around the world.

The session, titled “Fashion Is Pitching Startup Technologies Innovating the Now,” featured representatives from companies like autoRetouch, Shoulder Bare, Matador Meggings, Cerqular, and Recurate. Each company was pitched by their representative to a panel of judges that included the likes of Rohan Kapoor from Gorgias, Daina Burnes from Bold Metrics, and Veronica Chou from Everybody & Everyone, among others.

At the conclusion of the conference, it was announced that the winner of the pitch competition was Recurate—an integrated resale marketplace that invites customers to sell and buy “pre-loved” products on a company’s direct online store.

The startup-focused session is a reoccurring component of the Fashinnovation Worldwide Talks, and serves as a greater example of how the events’ founders are staying true to their mission in investing and empowering creators every chance they get.

Marcelo & Jordana Guimaraes—the famed husband and wife entrepreneurial team behind the global conference—saw an immediate and urgent demand for innovation in all business models that provided inspiration for the inception of the event. And since fashion has always placed itself at the epicenter of change, it seemed placing a particular focus on the industry would be a good place to start.

Clearly, their vision proved to be true.

Since 2018, Fashinnovation has hosted over 400 of fashion’s leading innovators to audiences representing 120 countries, which has included respected voices like Diane Von Furstenberg, Susan Rockefeller, Kenneth Cole, Julie Gilhart, and Fern Mallis, as well as new leaders including Steve Aoki, Chromat, Mara Hoffman, and Miroslava Duma.

Their platform has amplified the impact of the entrepreneurial spirit of the industry with Josh Luber (StockX), James Reinhart (thredUP), Katia Beauchamp (Birchbox) and Gihan Amarasiriwardena (Ministry of Supply), and has put sustainability front and center with Paul Dillinger (Levi’s), Carry Somers (Fashion Revolution) and Oskar Metsavaht (Osklen).
