Celebrate Earth Month: Recycle That Plastic!

April is Earth Month, a time to place an increased focus on sustainability efforts as we aim to be good stewards of the environment. Fry’s plastic recycling program makes it easy to recycle a variety of plastics by bringing them to a neighborhood store and depositing them into the plastic Zero Hunger | Zero Waste recycling bins located in the front vestibule. From grocery and retail shopping bags – to bubble wrap, cereal box liners and plastic bread bags – there are numerous plastics that can be placed in the store recycling bins at every Fry’s store.

“Earth Month is a perfect time to share our plastics recycling program with customers and the community,” said Pam Giannonatti, Fry’s Corporate Affairs Manager. “By making plastics recycling as convenient as going to the store, we support our commitment to being good environmental stewards and reducing as much waste as possible going to landfills.”

Plastic film and packaging that is accepted as part of Fry’s in-store plastic recycling program include:

  • Grocery & retail shopping bags (remove receipts and remove hard plastic and string handles
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper sleeves and bags
  • Shipping materials (shipping envelopes, bubble wrap, deflated air pillows)
  • Case stretch wrap
  • Outer packing wrapping (toilet paper, paper towels, diapers)
  • Resealable zipper bags
  • Produce bags
  • Bread bags
  • Plastic cereal box liners

The materials are then collected and recycled into other products such as park benches, plastic landscape bricks, and plastic lumber. In 2021, Fry’s recycled nearly 97 million pounds of plastics and cardboard from its stores and has committed to phasing out single-use plastic bags and transition to reusable bags by 2025.
