Canal Convergence: 10 Years of Water, Art, and Light

Want to celebrate artistry in the Valley? “Canal Convergence“, as described by the group that hosts it — Scottsdale Arts —  is a “free, 10-night event [that] features large-scale public artworks created by artists from around the world”.

In celebration of its ten-year anniversary, Scottsdale Arts is hosting Canal Convergence 2022, with the theme “Celebrating 10 Years of Water + Art + Light”. The event simultaneously emphasizes interactivity and sustainability in the art exhibits it features.

Honoring Artists

Canal Convergence seeks to honor the artists it has featured for years, displaying the evolution of the vibrant, global community that has made the event unique since the start. Returning artists for Canal Convergence include —

  •  B!G ART,
  • Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena,
  • HYBYCOZO,
  •  Immerge Interactive,
  • Walter Productions, and
  • Jeff Zischke.

There are also a number of new artists to be displayed for the first time, some of whom include —

  • AlexP,
  • Angela Fraleigh and Josh Miller, and
  • Pneuhaus and Bike-Powered Events.

Alongside these art displays, Canal Convergence will host a variety of family-friendly activities, workshops, food, drinks, and more.

Toward A Zero-Waste Event

For the 2022 installment of Canal Convergence, Scottsdale Arts hopes to continue its progress toward a zero-waste event. In 2018, 85% of event materials were diverted from the landfill, followed by 89% of materials in 2019 and 91% in 2021.

To achieve this, Scottsdale Public Art partners with Scottsdale Solid Waste Services and Scottsdale Water (to feature a water trailer where visitors to the event can refill water bottles).

Notable Draft Beers

One of the more notable sustainability measures employed by Scottsdale Arts is the “One Water Brewing Showcase”, featuring draft beers crafted only using recycled water. This particular display will take place during the first weekend of Canal Convergence, on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The re-incorporation of this showcase ties into the sustainable efforts of Canal Convergence, meant to “promote resource conservation” in the Valley.

Breweries set to be included at the showcase are the following:

  • Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company,
  • Desert Monks Brewing Co.,
  • Fate Brewing Company, Four Peaks Brewing Company, Goldwater Brewing Co.,
  • North Mountain Brewing Company,
  • O.H.S.O Brewery and Distillery,
  • Uncle Bear’s Brewery, and
  • Walter Station Brewery.

Some other sustainability initiatives being put forward at Canal Convergence include locally-sourced food from vendors, three bins to divide trash, recyclables, and compost, and the use of food-service disposables that are compostable/biodegradable.

Come, Enjoy!

Canal Convergence takes place from Friday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov.13. Come enjoy the artwork displays, and celebrate this wonderfully sustainable event!
