Spruce Peak Celebrates 14 Years of Sustainability Leadership

For 14 consecutive years, Spruce Peak — a mountain community in Stowe, Vermont — has earned the distinction of being an Audubon International Sustainable Community. A testament to its unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and the preservation of the region’s natural beauty, this milestone underscores Spruce Peak’s long-standing commitment to sustainability that began in 2010, when it became the first ski resort community in the nation to achieve this recognition. Since then, Spruce Peak has consistently met and exceeded the program’s rigorous standards. The community’s commitment extends beyond this core certification, with Spruce Peak also holding Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf status for The Mountain Course and Green Lodging Member recognition for The Lodge at Spruce Peak, bringing their total to three prestigious Audubon International certifications.

Spruce Peak’s commitment to sustainability is woven into the fabric of the community. Their approach encompasses developing sustainable buildings and landscapes that integrate seamlessly with the natural environment, incorporating innovative solutions to minimize their environmental footprint and promote ecosystem health. Several key initiatives exemplify this commitment. The Mountain Course, an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2006, balances a premier golfing experience with ecological responsibility. The Spruce Peak Village Center utilizes the largest geothermal field in northern Vermont to heat and cool its buildings, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels. An innovative stormwater management system, featuring heated sidewalks, eliminates the need for salt and gravel, protecting local waterways. The Treehouse at Spruce Peak, an all-electric building, stands as Vermont’s first of its kind, showcasing cutting-edge sustainable design. Finally, the Village landscape, nestled within 2,000 acres of preserved Vermont land, integrates seamlessly with the surrounding ecosystem, protecting vital wildlife habitat corridors.

Spruce Peak’s sustainability journey is ongoing and dynamic. Their focus encompasses responsible maintenance, golf course upkeep, recycling and waste management, energy efficiency, water management, and community engagement. Looking forward, Spruce Peak’s 2030 plan outlines ambitious goals, including further reductions in fuel consumption, increased landfill diversion rates (building on their current 42% diversion), promotion of mass transportation for employees and guests, and expanded educational programs for associates, owners, and guests. These efforts reflect Spruce Peak’s dedication to creating a thriving, sustainable community for generations to come.

Spruce Peak, Vermont’s premier luxury slopeside community at the base of Mount Mansfield, is celebrating its 21st year. Home to over 500 homeowners and members, it fosters a close-knit community centered around its charming, geothermal-powered Village Center. Spruce Peak offers a diverse range of amenities, including a 450-seat performing arts center, an award-winning golf course, an outdoor ice rink, The Lodge at Spruce Peak, and a members-only club. The community also features a spa, dining, and retail destinations. As an Audubon-certified sustainable community, Spruce Peak is committed to responsible stewardship of its 2,000 acres of preserved Vermont land. For more information, visit sprucepeak.com
