Editor’s Note March 2011

Springtime is here and that means cleaning, spring training and getting outside.  During this season I find there is a renewed spring (no pun intended) in my step when walking down the street, people seem to smile more and give a full wave.  Besides the underlying earth message of rebirth and rejuvenation, I look at spring as a time to venture out and try new things, whether it be actually trying to plant herbs (with the help of Doreen Pollack), adding more greens into my diet or encouraging the kids to branch out from their comfort zone and give something a go – this spring I’m going to work on my photo albums (digital to books), and I think I have about two to three years of catch-up.  Ah, spring, welcome back, please stay for a while for we had too short of a winter.

In our March issue, gardening is at the top of many “to do” lists.  Whether you’re a novice or a natural, enjoy the Transition into Spring Gardening by Aimee Welch and wherever you live, she’ll get you gardening in the right direction.  As I mentioned, spring is for rejuvenation – learn from Dr. Deepak Chopra about Renewing through Mediation, guaranteed to bring some restful awareness to your day.  It’s wedding season, and if you or a friend are getting married, you can’t miss Eco-Chic Weddings by Barbi Walker and find ways to “green up” the special day.  Looking to clean and de-clutter? Check out some tips from removing dust bunnies to reusing some of that supposed junk.  Then check out our green couple who will share their two cents about environmentally friendly cleaning products in He’s Green| She’s Green.

In WORK, learn about how Arizona is Building Green Communities by Judy Zimola and then discover how to Build A Home in A Day with Habitat for Humanity and SIPS.

Spring break is around the corner, and it’s time to PLAY.  Instead of Mazatlan, how about travelling Alaska, St. John or the greenest city in the world – Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK? Carrie Simmons in the Lean Green Tourism Machine will set your compass in the right direction.  If you plan to do some hiking up north, be aware of the poison ivy.  Our very own conservationist, Edward Ricciuti, will walk you through the Leaves of Three.  If you are hanging around town, check out the hottest new restaurant – Beckett’s Table and Justin Beckett’s one-of-a-kind dessert with chocolate bacon.  Last but not least, it’s March Madness and we have some recipes that will keep you healthy during game time.

Happy cleaning and good times,

Tishin Donkersley, M.A.
