Congrats are in order for Chandler Parks & Recreation! The organization won two statewide Awards of Excellence from the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) at its annual APRA Conference and Expo on August 11.
In a press release, Acting Community Services Director Barbara Young said: “It meant a lot to us to be recognized at the state level for our efforts. Our staff works very hard to provide the community with programs and events that facilitate social activity, healthy lifestyles and an appreciation for Chandler.”
Volunteer of the Year Award
This year’s Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Berit (Bert) and LaVerne Johanson for their work at the Chandler Senior Center.
The couple began attending the Senior Center in 1991. Shortly after, the Johansons began volunteering here. Twenty-five years later, the husband and wife team has devoted over 11,885 hours of their time making contributions to the active adult community.
“In partnership with actively engaged citizens like the Johansons, the City is able to continue providing engaging and enriching programs for residents of all ages and abilities,” said Young.
Outstanding Adaptive Program Award
Chandler’s Therapeutic Recreation Program was the recipient of the Outstanding Adaptive Program Award for the group’s development and coordination of the Chandler Fun Run held at Tumbleweed Park.
“This is truly an honor shared not only with the Community Services Department, but also our community and elected leadership as we continue to enhance the quality of life through parks and recreation,” said Young.
