One Breath at a Time

This Wellness Secret is Reshaping Boardrooms and Boosting Employee Productivity

By Teresa Porter

Sarah walked into my office like so many others, shoulders rigid, jaw clenched, moving with the hurried efficiency of someone perpetually late for the next crisis. “Just fix my shoulder,” she said, avoiding eye contact. “I have calls in an hour.”

But twenty minutes into the massage session, something shifted. As I worked through layers of tension building for years, her breathing deepened. Then came the tear, quiet at first but flowing freely as months of suppressed exhaustion finally found release.

“I don’t remember the last time I took a deep breath,” she whispered. “I’m drowning, but everyone thinks I’m swimming perfectly.”

With over two decades working with the body as a massage therapist, yoga instructor, and emotional release practitioner, I’ve learned the body never lies, even when our words do.

Sarah’s story isn’t unique. I’ve worked with hundreds of professionals who’ve convinced themselves that stress is just the price of success. They show up with back pain, headaches, digestive issues, anxiety, depression, but underneath it all, they’re carrying the weight of unsustainable workplace stress.

Our bodies are constantly trying to tell us something. Those tight shoulders? That’s not just from hunching over the computer. That jaw tension? It’s all the words that have been swallowed instead of speaking up.

Your employees say, “I just need to get through this quarter and then maybe I can focus on my health.”

When Numbers Tell Human Stories

I decided to close my 24-year-old massage practice in December 2023 to focus on teaching and advocating for the mind-body connection and supporting a larger movement toward mindfulness. While massage could provide temporary relief from symptoms, I realized that people could benefit from understanding the intricate ways their thoughts, emotions, and trauma impact their physical state. I wanted to help others develop genuine awareness of their mind-body connection, and empower them with practical tools and techniques they could use on their own.

My mission deepened when I was able to bring wellness practices — including breathwork, yoga, and mindfulness practices — into professional environments to educate about the mind-body connection.

Within months, employees reported dramatic shifts: Stress and anxiety plummeted by 57 to 75%, energy and focus soared by 45%, and creativity exploded with increases of 42 to 74%. Team connection improved by up to 57% and most participants reported lasting benefits.

The Ripple Effect

After just one to two months of working with an organization in weekly or bi-weekly sessions, not only do I get to witness the positive ripple effects of employees making these new wellness practices a priority, but the CEO or HR department will often hear remarkable stories from individual employees. A mom who learned to breathe again didn’t just change her workday; she changed her life at home, putting her laptop away at dinner and inviting her teenagers to engage in deep conversation. A CEO I worked with removed over 40 notifications from his phone after realizing that the constant digital buzz was fueling his anxiety. A young couple carved out phone-free time after bedtime stories, finding intimacy again in the quiet.

These aren’t just productivity wins — they’re profound life shifts made up of small, conscious decisions that ripple outward from the workplace into homes, relationships, and communities.

When individuals heal and find balance, they bring that energy back to the organization, creating a culture where everyone can thrive. One person’s transformation becomes the catalyst for collective change, as healthier, more present employees contribute to stronger teams, improved communication, and a more resilient organizational culture.
