Learn Nature-Based Healing Through the Counseling Programs at Prescott College

BY PRESCOTT COLLEGE COUNSELING FACULTY
Prescott College understands sustainability and reciprocal, nature-based healing as the living ethos of its Counseling Program—something practiced daily rather than simply taught. Faculty often describe this philosophy simply: the way we care for ourselves is the way we care for the Earth. Our bodies reflect what we consume, just as the land reflects how we live and interact with natural systems. At every level—from individual and family systems to communities and ecosystems—the interdependence of life guides our work. Inner and outer worlds are always in conversation, and Prescott’s Counseling Program helps students learn how to truly listen to that wisdom.
As a longstanding member of the EcoLeague, a consortium of mission-driven liberal arts colleges committed to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility through immersive, place-based education, Prescott College honors Nature as a co-therapist in the counseling process. Students are invited to engage with natural metaphor, rhythm, and relationship to deepen their understanding of both the ancient “talking cure” and the evolving profession of counseling. We encourage a holistic view of the person, grounded in ecological, biopsychosocial, and cultural systems to which we all belong.
Students consistently experience this integration as authentic and lived. One student, Liberty, shares, “What I love about Prescott College is that it is woven with a defined sense of passion and care. Both care for the environment and care for the wellness of humanity are inseparable in our community.”
Mental health and prevention are understood as inseparable from sustainability. Human and planetary well-being are deeply interconnected, and Earth justice and social justice are woven throughout the curriculum. Students learn to see clients, communities, and the planet itself as living systems that require reciprocal care in order to thrive. Counseling, in this view, is not only about symptom reduction—it is about restoring relationship.
Prescott College is one of the few counseling programs in the United States that offers optional nature-based and adventure-based fieldwork intensives that take place “out there,” in diverse locations around the world. Recent intensives have included experiences in Kino Bay and Tampa, Florida. Students may also pursue certificates in expressive arts therapy, nature-based counseling, and adventure-based counseling alongside their counseling degree. Specialized elective coursework rooted in somatic approaches, human sexuality, and other emerging evidence-based practices adds further depth and a progressive orientation that makes the program distinct.
The integrity of this approach is something students notice immediately. As Aedin Vlessis reflects, “There is an integrity at Prescott College because they walk the walk. From staff’s personal passions and research to the literal infrastructure and orchards on campus to the culture of students they draw, folks here are connected to and care deeply about our only home—Earth.”
To bring this ecological philosophy full circle, the Counseling Program emphasizes how everyday embodied practices mirror larger ecological processes. Students examine the connections between gut health, mental health, and daily rhythms as part of understanding prevention, regulation, and resilience. Attention to circadian patterns, grounding, and somatic awareness reflects the program’s belief that sustainable mental health grows from aligned habits and environments. These foundations support students as they move into expressive, relational, and creative dimensions of counseling practice.
Recognizing that students enter the program at many stages of life, Prescott College offers flexibility while maintaining a strong sense of community. From the outset, students are paired with advisors and success staff who provide individualized guidance toward licensure, professional identity development, and personal growth. Faculty are deeply committed to supporting each student’s journey.
Social justice and cultural exchange have long been central to Prescott College. We believe all voices deserve to be heard and that the sharing of wisdom is essential in an interconnected world. We all share the soil, and the health of our bodies—and future generations—depends on how we care for it. This understanding transcends boundaries and invites collective responsibility.
We invite you to explore our Counseling Program, visit the campus, learn about ongoing initiatives, and experience the Prescott community firsthand. All are welcome. Students from diverse backgrounds learn alongside one another in a space that values curiosity, integrity, healing, and giving back. We hope you will join us.
