Festival Season Is Here: Protect Your Hearing So You Can Enjoy It for Years to Come

Winter and spring bring some of the best outdoor events of the year. From music festivals and food gatherings to sporting events and community celebrations, this season is all about getting outside and enjoying the experience. With major festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach drawing huge crowds, it is also the perfect time to think about something that rarely makes the packing list: hearing protection.

Live music and crowd energy are part of what make these events unforgettable. But when sound levels climb too high for too long, the effects on your hearing can last far beyond the weekend.

Hearing damage is caused by both volume and duration. Many concerts and festivals regularly exceed 100 decibels, especially near speakers or the stage. At those levels, safe listening time can drop to less than an hour. Even outdoor venues can reach extreme volumes, since sound systems are often turned up to fill open space.

The challenge is that hearing damage is invisible and painless. You do not feel it happening, which is why prevention and awareness matter.

One helpful tool many people already carry is their smartphone or smartwatch. iPhones and Apple Watches include built-in sound level monitoring features that can alert you when environmental noise reaches potentially dangerous levels. These real-time notifications can remind you to step back, take a break, or put in hearing protection before damage occurs.

Protecting your ears does not mean sacrificing sound quality. It simply means being intentional. Foam earplugs are inexpensive and effective when inserted properly. Filtered “musician” earplugs are a great option for festival season because they lower volume evenly without distorting the music. For frequent eventgoers, custom-molded earplugs from an audiologist provide comfort and reliable protection. Look for a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 25 decibels or higher.

During an event, position yourself farther away from speakers whenever possible. Even a small increase in distance can significantly reduce sound intensity. Taking short listening breaks throughout the day also gives your auditory system time to recover.

If your ears ring, buzz, or feel muffled after an event, that is your body signaling stress to the delicate sensory cells inside your inner ear. Ringing in the ears without an external source, a condition known as tinnitus, is a common early warning sign of hearing damage. While symptoms sometimes fade within a day or two, repeated exposure without protection can lead to permanent damage.

If you suspect hearing loss or experience tinnitus following an event, schedule a hearing evaluation with a licensed audiologist. Audiologists are specifically trained to assess noise-related damage and can help determine the next best steps. Even if symptoms improve, establishing a baseline hearing test is a proactive move for anyone who regularly attends loud events.

Hearing loss is painless, progressive, and permanent, but it is also preventable. By making hearing protection part of your festival routine, you can continue enjoying live music and vibrant community events for decades to come.
