Crystals 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Energy, Style, and Ethical Sparkle

By Micaela Camacho

Crystals are trending: sparkling in fine jewelry pieces, tucked into handbags, and glowing on social media feeds. But for Sedona-based jewelry designer and spiritual entrepreneur Jamie Inglett, the allure runs deeper than Instagram aesthetics.

“Crystals aren’t just pretty,” Inglett said. “They’re energetic allies. How they’re sourced matters just as much as how they look.”

Inglett is the founder of Enchanting Earth, a viral online brand turned brick-and-mortar boutique in the heart of Sedona, Arizona. Her store curates luxury gemstone jewelry, rare mineral specimens, and metaphysical tools, with every item vetted for ethical sourcing.

“Ethical sourcing means the stone has been mined and handled with care — for both people and the planet,” she said. “We work directly with miners and lapidaries who share our values. We ask about labor, environmental practices, and full supply chain transparency.”

The global crystal trade, often unregulated, has come under scrutiny for its links to environmental degradation and unfair labor. For conscious consumers, that means asking better questions and resisting bargain-bin impulse buys.

“Shops that can’t tell you where their stones come from — or lean on vague marketing without substance — might be cutting ethical corners,” Inglett warned. “And if a rare stone is dirt cheap, chances are it’s synthetic, or worse.”

Despite the complexity of sourcing, Inglett encourages beginners to start with openness and curiosity. “You don’t need to know everything. Begin with what you’re drawn to. Crystals work best when they resonate with you.”

She shared her top five picks for a beginner’s crystal kit:

  • Clear Quartz – Known as the “master healer,” it amplifies energy and pairs well with other stones. Place it by your workspace or other crystals.
  • Amethyst – A calming stone linked to rest, intuition, and stress relief, amethyst is Ideal for bedside tables or meditation spaces.
  • Rose Quartz – The stone of unconditional love and emotional healing, this pink stone should be carried close to your heart.
  • Black Tourmaline – A powerful protector and grounding ally; keep it near entryways or in your pocket.
  • Citrine – Associated with creativity, clarity, and abundance, this stone is best placed in a wallet or home office for a sunny, energetic boost.

Before using a new stone, Inglett recommends cleansing it — through smoke, sound, moonlight, or selenite — and setting an intention. “Treat your crystal as a partner,” she said. “Ask how it wants to support you.”

While the science behind crystal healing remains debated, Inglett takes a grounded view. “You can be skeptical and still feel energy,” she said. “What matters is how it makes you feel.”

Whether you wear a crystal for fashion, comfort, or ceremony, Inglett hopes people choose with both intuition and intention.

“Crystals won’t fix you,” she said. “But they can remind you of the power you already hold.”
