A Love Letter to Mexico

Flamingo Estate is ringing in the new year with a sensory journey southward. With its arrival on January 20, the latest Seasonal Subscription Box is more than just a collection of goods; it is a passionate tribute to the vibrant landscapes of Mexico — from its lush jungles to its mist-covered cloud forests.
This curation highlights the ancient wisdom of Indigenous communities who have stewarded these ingredients for millennia. Every item serves as a vow to protect the land, the people, and the traditional crafts that define Mexican heritage.

The Curator: Gonzalo Samaranch

The heart of this collection is rooted in the work of Gonzalo Samaranch, a visionary conservationist and founder of Mestiza de Indias. Described as a “botanical Noah’s Ark,” Samaranch’s 500-acre project in the Yucatán Peninsula serves as a living laboratory for regenerative agriculture.
Working alongside local communities, Samaranch has dedicated himself to preserving heirloom seeds, wild vanilla vines, and ancient Mayan farming techniques. His deep partnership with Flamingo Estate has turned this dense jungle sanctuary into the jumping-off point for this season’s box, ensuring that every ingredient tells a story of restoration rather than extraction.

Cultivating Change

True to Flamingo Estate’s mission of radical stewardship, proceeds from this box are split evenly between two vital organizations:
  • CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of LA): Providing legal defense against detention and deportation, CHIRLA protects the families and rights of the essential workers who sustain our food systems.
  • The Melipona Bee Project: A three-year mission led by Samaranch in the Yucatán to save the endangered Melipona bee. By building sanctuaries and restoring Mayan knowledge, this project creates a pesticide-free future for the jungle.

What’s Inside the Box?

The January collection features six artisanal products that blend Mexican tradition with the Estate’s signature elegance:
Vanilla Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Regeneratively grown Vanilla beans from Veracruz—the native home of vanilla—are slowly infused into Heritage EVOO from Ojai, California.
Coffee Soap Brick: A hand-blended masterpiece featuring organic coffee beans, amber, clove, and chocolate clay, finished with a subtle hint of tobacco.
Banana Leaf Candle: Housed in a rustic terracotta votive, this scent captures the “living perfume” of the tropics with notes of Ylang Ylang, black pepper, and green banana leaf.
Banana Balm to Body Oil: This decadent treatment melts into the skin, using violet leaf and patchouli to leave the body dewy and radically nourished.
Mole Negro: A true labor of love. Flamingo Estate’s head of kitchen, Blanca Carreno, shares her mother’s 24-ingredient Oaxacan recipe, updated with a unique Estate twist.
Dzidzilché Honey: A rare, monofloral honey with a slightly spicy profile, produced by Indigenous beekeepers in the Yucatán as part of the Melipona Bee Project.
Through the vision of Gonzalo Samaranch and the powerful partnership of Flamingo Estate, this box transforms a simple subscription into a powerful act of conservation to protect the landscapes, people, and artistry of the Mexican communities that created these pieces.
